Two things change once it is in there.

The fire burns cleaner. Air gets pulled up between the walls, heats on the way, and feeds back in above the flame. Burning the smoke a second time is what keeps it out of your face, and none of it requires a fan or a battery.

And the block stops taking a beating. Direct heat against stone or masonry is what opens up mortar joints and spalls the face off manufactured block a few seasons in. On most block an open fire against it voids the manufacturer warranty outright. A liner keeps flame off the stone and that warranty intact.

These are complete bowls with a solid vented bottom, not bare rings. Air pulls in through the lower vents, heats as it rises between the two walls, and feeds back into the fire through the upper ring. That second burn takes most of the smoke out of it. No fan, no power, no assembly. Set it in and you are finished.

It is a complete bowl, not a bare ring. The floor is a raised vented log rest, so air gets under the fire and the ash has somewhere to fall instead of sitting on dirt or gravel.

One thing to be straight about: there is no removable ash pan or ash catcher in this one. Ash collects in the bottom of the bowl and you shovel it out when it builds up. If a pull-out ash tray is the feature you are shopping for, this is not that insert.

The outer brim rests on top of your stone and overlaps the lip of the opening. That brim does more work than it looks like. It keeps flame and radiant heat off the block, and heat cycling against masonry is what opens up mortar joints and spalls the face off manufactured stone a few seasons in.

What arrives: the insert and a solid steel snuffer lid sized to it. Set the lid on when you are done for the night and it smothers the fire, then keeps rain and leaves out of the bowl until the next one.

Every insert comes with a pack of our Sure-Fire Starters. They ship separately from us, not in the crate with the insert.
